Gears of War

Gears of War (GoW) is a first person shooter for the X360. It won best 360 game and game of the year on GS. I was surprised when I head this as I thought it was going to go to the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion which is a open-ended RPG that came out earlier this year. So, when my friend got it, I was round their instantly to check it out and see if it was worthy of the award. In short, yes it is. Although I prefer Oblivion, the addition of multiplayer gives this game have a very strong advantage.

I started off with the tutorial. With in seconds you are wowed by the game graphics. Then, you are presented with a choice. You can either go one way, which is safer but longer, or the other way which is quicker but far more dangerous. Choices such as these are scattered throughout the game, but, as I understand, are few and far between. I choose the safer one so that I could get used to the controls. The controls are very intuitive with only a couple of buttons as a surprise. One of the main features to survive is pressing (A). This will put you behind any cover you are near. You then use left trigger to come out and aim (using the right trigger to fire). Alternatively, you can "blind fire" which is where you hold your gun above cover and shoot. The A button also allows you to dive to over cover quickly so you can improve your position without too much danger. However, while you are still getting used to the controls, you may find yourself darting from two bits of cover when you just want to walk away. Also, you can, when you are hiding behind cover, jump over it in a cool, action movie style way. The problem is, to do this you must first hind behind the cover, so, if you are just trying to look cool it is difficult.

The combat, which is clearly the focus of this game, is fairly standard bolstered up by above-standard graphics, awesome physics and a chainsaw! Combat is almost non-stop and very chaotic. Picking up the game thread, my friend loaded himself in, which was perfectly seamless and this happened whilst watching a intro video which I was very impressed with. In combat, you need to hide behind cover if you want to survive for a lengthy period of time. As I mentioned, you press LT to come out of the cover and aim. You then must quickly find a enemy, shoot it and hide again. You can carry up to four weapons but in the game play I experienced, more advanced weapons, such as sniper rifles, would be completely unsuitable as the enemy is about 20 feet from you and swarm towards you in huge packs. The common tactic is just blowing them away as quickly as you can with the machine gun you have. Sometimes, if the enemy surround you, cover is unusable you must charge at them with the chainsaw. This is both very effective and bloody affair with blood being spurted all over the screen.

In the middle of combat, one of your team with probably be killed, in my case, it was my friend. In the game you can bring people back to life or "revive" them as the game calls it. As I ran towards him and leaped over the cover I noticed the bady was still there. I kicked up my chainsaw, sliced him and was just in time to save my friend. Just as I did, he shot a bady from behind me. What makes this game so good, is that this pace and intensity is non-stop. Portals open in the ground and the enemy come pouring out of them. You roll around on the floor dodging fire and searching for some cover, only to see it get shredded by the bullets.

The multiplayer manages to recreate this mayhem with only two people. The maps are dense which makes finding each other quite easy. A battle with 8 or 16 people would just be physco. In MP you can revive yourself except when you have been chain sawed. However, while you are reviving yourself, the other person can stop you by shooting you, stamping on your head or chain sawing you.

In one MP game, we were in this mansion, I was hiding behind a wooden pillar and he had just entered on the ground floor. I swung round the post and sprayed him with fire. He dived to the floor and shot up at my deck. I inadvertently undocked from the cover, which was shedding splinters at the time. I dived to the next pillar and slammed my back to it. I swung round again but he was already behind the sofa. I shot the sofa and he saw it shred in front of his eyes. He leapt over the remains’, I shot him. He fell. I ran over to finish him off, but in my desire to be speedy I docked on to some cover and kept diving between the opposite post. I finally got free and he shot me having revived himself. I desperately tapped (a) to bring myself back to life but he was already on top of me with a chainsaw. By this point I had broken a sweat and was breathing fast. "Again?" he said, "Hell yeah."

The graphics have raised the bar to a very high standard, and this wasn't even on a HD TV. The detail on everything is astounding and the blood is, well, bloody.

I think this puts us in very good stead for a solid Halo 3. This game has showed what the system is capable of as the game showed no noticeable lag, even in intense fire fights. If Halo 3 can reproduce this intensity, which has never previously been possible (which is why I like DF2 so much as the MP has the chaotic intensity which every other game is now starting to reach), but with the amazing Halo 3 vehicles. If Bungie do this, Halo 3 truly will be amazing.

On the note of Halo 3. I have a theory that I am going to try and validate. A month or so ago there were rumours that Brutes would be playable in the upcoming Halo. This rumour was inspired because the Brutes were having a lot of attention realted to weapons development. This is what happened with the Elite in Halo 2. Then, on the front of XBM there was the Halo "3" with "the holy trinity" written underneath in Halo script. Everyone just interpreted this as the holy 3 games. Today, I viewed this video and it spent quite a long time dipicting the time gone in to developing the new brute. My theory is this, That you can control the Brute, in a battle against a greater evil. These 3 act as the Holy Trinity. A more off the wall idea is that it will be like "Brute Force" (coincidence?) which allowed you to switch between the different characters. At the very least, the Brutes are going to play a crucial role in Halo 3.

2006 Analysis and 2007 an outlook

2006 has been a very good year for gaming news. The news started off with 360s being out of stock. The world followed posters and read numerous reports to try and find out when the Microsoft Xbox 360 would be back in stock. Finally, about March it was possible to walk in to a store and pick up a 360. Ironically, up till that point, the 360 did not have a very strong range of games and no must-have games. Then, the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was released. This was a open ended free roaming game. It has over 100 hours of gameplay and virtually unlimited re-playability due to the shear number of choices you could make. You could even become a vampire!

At this time, everyone knew the PS3 and the Revolution were on the horizon, but did not know any details. Shockwaves were then sent around the world as Nintendo renamed their next generation console the "Wii." At first people thought this was a April fools joke, but Nintendo were deadly serious. Just when people were starting to doubt Nintendo E3 came along and Nintendos press conference blew everyone away. Starting with the legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto orchestrating a band playing the theme tune to Legend of Zelda and concluding with a extremely realistic game of tennis the audience were mesmerized. Sonys, however was just a collection of numbers and all Microsoft had to offer were some shots of Halo 3 and some more numbers. E3 came and went, people returned buzzing about the Wii.

In July, Sony announced that their controller would be reverting to the dual shock except with a *wait for it* tilt function *gasp*. This was clearly copying Nintendo, however, the fact that they criticized Nintendo for it is clearly hypocritical. Then, we were all shocked when announcements came that E3 was being down-sized to a much smaller event. Next came Microsoft announcing its new hardware, these included the 360 steering wheel which was later nominated as the best new hardware. Also around this time, more details were released about the upcoming Splinter Cell game. The summer was also littered with reports of PS3 delays, blu-ray malfunctions and other such negative stories for Sony.

September was big month for consoles as both Sony and Nintendo released important information. Sony announced that its console would not be coming out in time for Christmas in Europe and would be coming out in March. It also down-sized its estimated amounts of consoles in America and Japan. Nintendo, however, released the launch date and price for the Wii. £179 8th December.

Not much happened in October as it is a Games month. Amongst the releases was Medieval Total War 2, which managed to get a 16+ which is very impressive for a RTS. Sony announced that it had gone in to the red.

November the Wii and PS3 come out in America and Japan. Once again, Wii very positive and Ps3 disappointing. In Japan, the PS3 only managed to get 86 000 and it was not much better in America. Furthermore, in the America launch, someone was shot in a armed robbery because he refused to give the robbers money because he wanted a PS3. The Wii, however, managed to get 600 000 Wiis in America. This was better than both the PS3 and Xbox 360. Everyone in Europe felt down as neither console had reached us. Not so positive for Nintendo was the opening collection of reviews for the Wii with only Legend of Zelda and a American football game attaining high scores.

December was a quite month with Gamespot having to makes its own news. GS released a comparison of the Xbox 360 and the PS3 on the graphics front, and the 360 won, much to the shock of many. The month concluded with GS best and worst awards.

So what do we have to look forward for in 2007. Well, all consoles are out so now we can settle down and release some good games. News wise, we will have to see what comes of E3, the PS3 controller and the Wii Controller. It will be a good year for playing games with Halo 3, Metroid Prime and Grand Torisomo for each of the consoles.

Why are Wii Waiting

It is Christmas tommorow for anyone who has just come out of a coma, and Nintendo have managed to get their Console the Wii out in time for it, they have won best new hardware on GS awards (see previous posts) and the motion sensing controller works. They have done that hard bit. So, am I looking forward to getting one for Christmas. No, and not because I do not want one. Like every other console, there are not enough to go around. Admitiedly, they have more than Sony or Microsoft, however, it is still a disappointment for many.

Any readers of this blog will know that I want a Wii (I am bursting :P), so I phoned up my local Game store to find out what the stocks were like. They said they were completly sold out and were not expecting another dilivery before Christmas. They also said they had between 30 and 50 preorders that they had not fufilled. Then, thursday evening, I happened to notice on the Game website that they had updated the Wii page. They said they were reciving limited amounts of Wii's in thursday/friday. I went to Game on Friday and there weren't any and it was to busy for me to ask any questions. I think compared the the X360, you will be able to get your hands on one before March, however, I do not think you are going to get away with is as a "late" Christmas present.

From everyone (me) here at thkgamereview.blogspot.com have a merry Christmas, and happy new year full of fun and rewarding games for the Wii.

Stay tuned for 2006 Analysis, 2007 outlook and the best of 2006 annual awards.

Gears of War beats Oblivion

Continuing on my old post, continuing to go through the awards at Gamespot and was stunned to discover, the best game on 360 was NOT The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, but in fact Gears of War. Now, although GS rave about Gears of War, and I should have seen it coming, the other reviews I have read have said it is good, but just a FPS. Oblivion really was something else with in-depth play incomparable, stay tuned for more surprised as I continue in to THE BEST AND WORST OF 2006 AS SAID BY GS

Gamespot bows down to Wii

Gamespot have recently released their best and worst of 2006. I managed to grab a look at it today. I cycled through it, two points interested me. The best news story of 2006 was the cracking of Sonys dictatorship. Up to this point I thought GS were anti Wii and pro PS3. I was even more shocked to find that The best new hardware was in fact the Wii. The fact that GS are turning on Sony, with both this and my aforementioned Ps3 Xbox 360 Graphics Comparison, Sony may finally be losing its grip on the games market.

Also, the second show from my www.blogtalkradio.com show is now available on both iTunes and on the website here. I interviewed a Chris Burnside whose blog is themanikone.wordpress.com, he owns a Wii and I "grilled" him on it. The show experienced a number of technical issues, the first 2 and a half minutes are silence, the sound quality was not very good, and recorded conversation with my local game store was not audible. The last problem I am dealing with, I will upload the file to my own server and I will post a link. In short, it said they did not know when they were getting more Wiis and had between 30-50 preorders still left to fulfil. See future posts for updates. Possibly in about 5 minutes.

It is Christmas, but more importantly it is the end of the year. Hopefully, 27th 28th time I will be posting a couple of posts. One summarizing 2006 and giving a outlook to 2007, the other giving my favourite video game, music CD, and new film, with two runner ups for each. Stay tuned for that.

3.2 MillionWiimotes called back

There have been a great deal of reports on the internet about over-enthusiastic players swinging controllers areound madly. This then causes them to let og of the controller and it flys out of their hands breaking many items including a large, flat screen HD TV! A number of customers are blaiming it on the weak wrist strap. As a result Nintendo are calling back 3.2 billion controllers to fit a new, stronger cord.

To find out examples of what damages the controller has caused there is a blog donnated to it. Wii have a problem

Also, searching youtube for Wii have a problem or a term simmilar to that, will no doubt result in some interesting and comical videos.

Wii Launched & Blog Update

The Wii came out today, but if I hadn't already have known, I wouldn't have. It was some what a anti-climax for me. There were no adverts in game. I still don't have one. No one I know has one, I can't play on one in the shop and there hasn't been a surge in reviews because it has been out in America. The only difference is, I now have a email saying happy Wii day. Wii day was a major let down. Even on GS, it was just a todays stories; IT WASN'T EVEN A FEATURE. To combat this I am going to scoure to blogosphere in search for a English Wii owner and interview him on my gaming show.

Happy Wii Day

I, as no one will probably notice, have switched to the new blogger. I am going to try and go though my old posts and label them, but from this point on they will be labeled. In gaming news, the Halo 3 trailer has been released and is viewable here. And on that note TSAH2 is very funny flash movie and is viewable here.

Predicted game of the year: Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Xbox 360 Versus PlayStation 3 Graphics Comparison

Xbox 360 Versus PlayStation 3 Graphics Comparison - Features at GameSpot
This is a major point. The selling point of the PS3, was that it was superior i hardware at the VERY least. In this comparison, the graphics are usually worse, and also the frame rate was meant to be slower. Either Sony have been lying, or there is something seriously wrong with their hardware. On the last page, scroll down to the comment by ellisthered it is very good.

This has stunned me. The 360, I always thought was a better console overall, because it had Xbox live, a rumble controller and good graphics, on top of a suitable price tag. However, I thought that, if you paying £550 for something, the very least you want from it is it to be the best at SOMETHING.

Sony have, as I originally said they would, screwed this up. They say that Microsoft are wrong for launching two different price packages, and then do that. They say that the Wii controller is gimmicky, then copy it and, because they don't have as much time to make it good, it really is gimmicky. They price it way above the other consoles. They claim it is going to have the best graphics and processing power: it doesn't. They waste time and gamers money adopting an obscure format (blu-ray) like they did on the PSP. The only thing Sony have done right is not change the console name so millions of people go out and buy it because it is the PLAYSTATION 3. Will there be a PS4, I would have always said yes, but I don't know anymore. It will be interesting to see what happens to Ebay prices after this report. And Sony's stock price for that matter.

USA Wii Launch sucsesful

The Wii has been released in the USA and Japan now. Nintendo has announced the numbers of units sold in America. It was 600 000. This is more than 6x the amount Sony sold/shipped in Japan who only sold a mesaly 86000 and a roumored 300000 in the US. Nintendo has out done both Sony and Microsoft on getting consoles to shops on launch day. They still sold out!

Show delayed

Due to prior arangments that I had forgotten about, my show has been delayed until saturday at 8 O'clock, same topics. Sorry

WII

The Wii is sold out. We have the same situation as we did with the X360 and what we will have with the PS3. Preorders on sites such as Amazon rival a new Coldplay album and the Harry Potter books, which were at the top of the preorder chart. Amazon has said that it does not know when it is getting more stock nor even hinted as to whether you can get one for Christams.

HMC are also making a "we don't promise anything" stance:

3) Due to high levels of demand and restrictions by Nintendo on stock availability, stock may be limited and HMV cannot, therefore, guarantee your pre-order will be fulfilled on the estimated release date, nor that your pre-order will be fulfilled within any given time-frame. Accordingly, release dates are subject to change by Nintendo and any date given for fulfillment of your order is an estimate only, is not guaranteed and should not be relied upon.

I will hopefully phone Game and HMV and try and find out when they expect to get there next shipment. HMV, because of the way they are running this, it will be quite some time before you will be able to walk in and buy one. I may preorder because I want to use my HMV games card, however, I fear the Que may already be too long and I will get it much earlier at game. Either way, the second I do expect a media whitewash followed by tons of videos. In other news, the PS3 has come out in both Japan and the USA and it is a complete sell out. This is also true with the Wii in the USA.

iTunes Crossed the line

I was about to download the song "Chelsea Daggers" off the album Costello Music by the Fratellis when iTunes said something had happened that made this task impossible. I went in to the store to investigate. Once I had arrived at the relevant page, I discovered that it was now only down-loadable with the album. Apple know they have the market effectively cornered and they know that is the song people are most likly to buy. This is a case of iTunes taking advantage of its customers. Maybe this has happened before, but it is unacceptable, and as a consequence I am not going to buy and more iTunes vouchers, or download the song that I love. Please sign this "Petition" if you support me. Maybe we can get a apology, no seriously!

PS3 backward compatibility marred - News at GameSpot

PS3 backward compatibility marred - News at GameSpot: "This isn't a huge issue, sure, but if you payed $600 + for your system, it would be awful nice if it worked like it's supposed to."

I was reading about the backwards compatability issues with the PS3 and the comment "his isn't a huge issue, sure, but if you payed $600 + for your system, it would be awful nice if it worked like it's supposed to." made me simle. Some people are critizing sony, but the X360 only 200 games WORK. Obviously, we have to wait to the Wii to see if if Nintendo pull it off, but they are including support for different disksizes, about 40 years of consoles and they have a completly different controller to anything before. I don't think this is a massive failure for Sony, like people who can afford a console at $600+ sold his PS2 which played PS1 games fine.

I am so there!! Is this good, I was unsure about the downsize of E3 but now we have the best of both worlds. A small one for the press so that is not complete chaos all the time, but still a huge one for huge fun.

PS3 pushing SCE $1.71 billion into red - News at GameSpot

PS3 pushing SCE $1.71 billion into red - News at GameSpot

Sony admit to losing money. Is this a slippery slope that will result in the downfall of Sony. The thing that Sony is relying on is blu-ray. The problem is, last time Sony tried to enforce their own format, it failed. Movies stopped becoming widly avalible for the PSP, could this be the same old story. Part of me wants to see Sony die just so I have proved my self right. However, less compettion means less development and competitive pricing. If Blu-ray does fail, will Microsoft buy Sony so they can use the controller. Another theory of mine is Google. Why not? They have the funds, they have the technology, but most importantly, the still have Sergy and Brin and a whole team devoted to coming up with innovative ideas. For those who are unable to read between the lines I was suggesting that Google could create a console.

PLAYSTATION 3(R)

Sorry about the capitals it is how Sony like it written.

I have been thinking about the PS3, trying to classify it, a copy of the 360, a super computer, a uninnovate hunk of junk. However, as I was watching a video, I realised what I had been looking for. It is a souped up PS2. The controller is identical except with the tilt which most games aren't going to use. Hell, even the console doesn't look that different except it is less practical when you put it sideways. This is fine except a PS2 is £100 with 2 games, but a PS3 is £500 plus 2 games at £75 so £650 for better graphics. Admittedly they are awesome, but £550 for better graphics?!

Only the US...

BBC NEWS World Americas UN initiates arms trade agreement: "Only the US"

I think this shows the USA in a very negative light. I know I don't normally cover politics but this is a exception. The US has such a large economy it is not like they won't be able to survive without their weapons trade. It is because, if the US stop selling weapons to Irak then there won't be any reason to fight them.

Blog Update

Sorry about the lack of posts recently. Just moved house and have a lot on my plate. I have just got the expansion pack to Civilization 4. I have experienced some of the new features and I am much enjoying playing the barbarian mod. It has, however, inspired me once again to review Civilization 4. I will hopefully get round to it this half term.

Console News
Xbox 360
The new camera for the Xbox 360 is now out. It is effectively a eye toy. It allows video conversations over Xbox live, custom display pictures, and a couple of completely useless cool features. Its RRP is £35 and so is quite expensive considering it is just a gimmick. It fits in with the style of the 360 though. The pack includes 1 month Xbox live gold, a microphone and the camera.

Halo 3 is due out this March and a RTS is also coming out, Halo Wars. This game is not going to come out on PC so that they can make a intuitive controller for a console based RTS. However, I believe this is a mistake, not only because a lot of the Microsoft market are PC gamers, but because they are spending time on a intuitive controller, rather than a innovative game.

PS3
The PS3, although coming out this November as planned in the rest of the world. In deepest darkest Europe it is coming out this March. However, this is not all bad. In the USA, it is reported that when Sony were asked how many units had been allocated to each shop in America, the answer was 6. This means, that there will be global shortage, however, when it comes out in Europe the problem should be much less. Having said this, my dads friend went in to Game, the man behind the counter asked him if he would like to reserve a PS3. The deposit was £50, when asked if this equaled a guaranteed PS3 on launch day, the reply was : "No, your name will be put in a hat and you stand a chance of getting one on launch day"

The expected price is going to be, as predicted, a two tier launch price. This, although predictable, is slightly hypocritical of Sony as they criticized Microsoft for doing this with their launch. The two price plans are:
£335 - CHEAP
Will contain a 20gb hard drive
£400
Will contain a 60gb hard drive

If this expense wasn't enough, remember the games are going to be £75. That is a lot of money to justify spending on a game. The reported reason for the delayed launch was caused by a "diode creation error" and if I was to read between the lines :"and you are our least important market and we have to miss someone out."

Another interesting feature of the PS3 is the controller named thraxis. Cool name, not so cool idea. They wanted to be innovative so they have built in a motion sensing tilt. At first I thought this was just a attempt to be innovative like Nintendo whilst still doing Microsoft on the stats front, it didn't look like the best or worst idea, I didn't think it added much, but it hardly took much away. However. after some thinking, I realized the idea was made up by a board of directors. The tilt function is used a a accelerator on some racing games, which means you are going to be holding the controller at a very difficult angle. Simulate that with your hands and try holding that for a couple of minutes. It starts to ache after a couple of seconds. Hopefully, it will be possible to disable this feature for games that do not lend themselves to it.

Wii

In comparison, the Wii is going to cost £179 and is coming out on the second of December. Some videos were released on the Nintendo website showing new players experience the controller for the first time. It looks like Nintendo have done it. At first I was skeptical because I didn't think it could work. I haven't quite forgiven them for the Micro, but I am coming close. The thing that Nintendo has done well this time well is external developers and the introduction of games aimed at a higher age audience than 4.

The graphics do not look significantly better than the NGCs, it still doesn't play DVDs, it doesn't have a hard drive, but you know what, I don't care. Providing they throw in Wii sports with it I am happy. I look forward to buying my Wii this Christmas with Red Steel as my game.

PC
Not much news here. Vista is still quite a while away . The new flight simulator from Microsoft has come out. Gamespot gave it a 8.4 so if you are looking for a good flight simulator or know someone who does, it may be a good Christmas present. I have discovered that wired Xbox 360 controllers, although not guaranteed to work, should so. However, if you do not want to take the risk there is a special version. The same goes for the web cam and external HD DVD player available for the 360.

Sony PS3 launch delayed in England

Sonys next generation console, the PS3, is expected to be released this March in Europe. It is still going to be launched in November everywhere else. This falls right into Microsofts plans of releasing Halo 3 at the same time, as that is the expected launch month for Halo. The plan being that shops like game will split the advertising between them, and a game getting the same amount as a new console is good for any company, even Microsoft. It might tip people towards getting a 360 as they think "I really liked that game" and not take a second glance at the huge PS3 poster.

However, it is a gamble, as they forget that, although Microsoft have a huge fanbase for Halo. Sonys is unbeatable at the moment so it may just be shooting them selves in the foot. Only time will tell.

Finally, shops like Game will know they are making a bigger profit on the PS3 so might just advertise that.

In conclusion, I think this will not work for Microsoft because shops are out to make money and Sonys fan base in only revealed by Nintendos, but Sonys covers more than one type of person.

Wii Launch Center - Wii arrives in Europe on December 8 for £179 - News at GameSpot

Wii Launch Center - Wii arrives in Europe on December 8 for £179 - News at GameSpot

Update: WII £179 in England, however we will have to wait till December. This staggered launch should hopefull reduce over-demand, not that I think that is going to be a huge problem in the UK.

Wii launch title and price announced

Gamespot repor Wii launch details.

It is offical. Nintendo's Wii will be coming out this November the 19th for $249.99 dolars; £159.06. More than I first anticpated, but still significantly cheaper than the X360 and pocket money compared to the PS3, although I would like to not that Sony have made no offical announments, although I suspect one in imminent.

In other Wii news released today, the Wii will NOT be able to play DVDs. Although you make think this is bad, I personally don't think it will make any difference. The poeple who are going to puchase the Wii aren't the kind of people who want their console to do a hundered and one different things. So disappointing yes, suprising sort of, a major problem no.

Final Specs:
WII Launch Date and MSRP: Nov. 19, 2006, in the Americas at an MSRP of $249.99.

Color: White.

Size: About 8.5 inches long, 6 inches wide and less than two inches thick (157mm x 215.4mm x 44mm).

Controls: "Up to four Wii Remote controllers can be connected at once using wireless Bluetooth technology. The wireless signal can be detected within 10 meters of the console. Both the Wii remote and Nunchuk controllers include a three-axis motion sensor. The Wii Remote controller also includes a speaker, rumble feature and expansion port, and can be used as a pointer within 5 meters of the screen. The Wii Remote controller has a power switch, plus pad, A, B, Minus, Home, 1 and 2 buttons. The Nunchuk controller includes an analog control stick and C and Z buttons."

The Look: "The Wii console features a compact design that...can be displayed either vertically or horizontally."

Media: "A single self-loading media bay will play single- or double-layered 12-centimeter optical discs for the Wii console, as well as 8-centimeter Nintendo GameCube discs."

Channels: "The Wii Channel Menu is the main gateway for a variety of...interactive multimedia, entertainment and communication functions."

Communication: "The Wii console can communicate with the Internet even when the power is turned off. The WiiConnect24 service [content and game updates] even if the system is idle. Users can connect wirelessly using IEEE 802.11, or with a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor. The Wii console also can communicate wirelessly with the Nintendo DS."

Virtual Console: "The Wii console will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The Specs: "The Wii console has 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi capability. A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory. Design was optimized with state-of-the-art processing technologies that minimize power consumption, keep the console compact and enable the 'sleepless' WiiConnect24 mode."

CPU: "PowerPC CPU (code-named "Broadway") Made with a 90 nm SOI CMOS process, jointly developed with and manufactured by IBM."

Graphics Processing Unit: "Being developed with ATI."

Other Features:"Four ports for Nintendo GameCube controllers. Two slots for Nintendo GameCube memory cards. An AV Multi-output port for component, composite, or S-video."

Forza Moter Sport 2

There is going to be a new Forza Moter Sport for the Xbox 360. The first one was a increibly realistic driving game where you could customise your cars to no end, whilst still retaining the realism that Need for Speed lacked.

Also, Microsoft announced the following add ons for the Xbox 360 at Lepizig, the games convention in Germany. They are making:

  • Wireless steering wheel - it looks soo cool.
  • A wireless headset that looks just like the thing in Dr. Who ie. a Blue Tooth headset.
  • A wireless HD DVD player, I personally thought the Xbox 360 played HD DVDs but apparently not.
  • The webcam - comes with 1 month/year of Xbox live gold subscriptio.
  • New face plates (Master Cheif, Forza 2 and some weird clowd thing?)
On the PC front they are releasing the world most sexiest mouse ever, sadly it will cost you £35. It has 7 customisable buttons, blue neon strips and interchanable face plates?!
Also, there is a device you can plug in to your computer and allows you to use wireless Xbox 360 controllers.

Nintendos confrence apparently went terrible as the article puts across. However I can confirm it will be less than 250 euros, £168.903. I doubt it will be that much though.

I could not find any news on Sony, I think they were ill or something because belive me I looked.

Live Music

I was just watching Feeder at Reading and Leeds on BBC3 when I realised how exclusive music is. Every few minutes or so, a message would pop up at the bottom saying: "The following performance contains strobe lighting." Now, this means that if you are epileptic there is a very high chance of an epileptic fit. Basically all Gigs and festivals use strobe lighting, which means anyone who is epileptic can't go to any festival/gig at all. All so it looks a little cooler. This is not acceptable really. Any other industry and it would be discrimination. Please leave a comment if you agree with me, because it isn't fair.

Gamespot no longer trustworthy

It is offical, you can no longer rely on Gamespot for reviews. No this isn't a way of getting more readers. Here is my reason, I receive emails from them and they say what good previews they have got coming amongst other things, they had a preview of guitar hero 2. Now when I went to my local game shop, I saw the guitar for the 1st game and it looked the MOST tackiest thing you have ever seen, in the email it was one of their game of the years and "couldn't wait to get their hands on more information." Do you really think that a company that likes guitar legends should be trusted with what game you spend your hard earned cash on. No is the answer.

I should point out I have only seen the guitar, if anyone has the game and it is actually good then please inform me. Also, I would like to point out that Moto GP a game that I reviewed in my last quick reviews is actually a good game, I had a chance to play it whilst knowing the controls. Expect a updated Quick Review next month.

Finally I am moving house so expect a drought of posts for the next couple of weeks as I will be busy moving.

PS3 to win console war?

I was browsing gamespot and found a interesting article talking about 1 company who have predicted that Sonys PS3 will win the next gen console wars. I found this very interesting because I personally think Sony are going to die. Microsoft have taken over the un-innovative company that makes solid consoles, and Nintendo have left no room for another innovative company so where do Sony come in. Sony used to rule because the PS1 was a new console with basically no opposition, it had a great controller and stunning graphics for the time. The PS2 had competition, and I think came out joint first. It had the best controller, a wide range of games, and not below average graphics. However, Microsoft have learnt form their mistakes and know how to make a decent controller. Plus, Microsoft and Sony both have external funds, so they can both chuck money at this, however, Microsoft had got pockets deeper than the Grand Canyon and definitely Sonys, so they can effectively buy Sony out. Also they have experience in combining everything together, which is what people want now. So this is why I think Sony have had their day.

Before I found out about the cost of the PS3 I thought that they would be able to hang on, keep creating consoles, selling them to their extensive fanbase (that is something they have in their favour) however, it is rumored to be as much as £750 which means half their target audience is gone. I predict doom.

More Quick Reviews

Half Life 2
Half life 2 is a popular 1st person shooter from Valve that today I was lucky enough to play on. It isn't like any old 1st person shooter. Sure there is shooting and navigating levels but you can pick stuff up and the physics are out of this world. It has a simmilar physics engine to Splinter Cell 4, however, unlike SC4 it incourages you to put it to the test as in the latter levels you have this tool which means you can suck anything towards you and then fire it. For example I blocked a door with this crate and then after 5 minutes the crate broke up under the strain (it also started smoking which was a bit weird)

That Warhamme Game RTS Game
I have temporailrly forgotten the name for this game. This game is a intense RTS. Once one has got past the slightly un-orthadox set up of how to build units and building you can have a really good time with it. Instead of collecting resources you have to take these posts, these, I belive, are there so that even deffensive players get lured out to fight. I played on easy which meant even the strongest enmies run when they get shot. The graphics are really good and the game only requires 256mb RAM which meant it ran really smothly, if you are looking for a RTS, I recomend this before AoE 3.

Quick Reviews

PGR 3 - More in depth
My friend got PGR3 with his Xbox 360 so I can now do a more in depth review to it. The single player feels like you are flying through it, there are less races than in PGR2 and a lot of the time it feels too easy. Now I should note I am playing it on the easiest level, but, unlike PGR2, I don't know if it is actually long enough so that by the time you come to do the 1st level in the next difficulty whether it will be new or not. Having said that, the AI is clever and, as usual, will play as foully as you do, if not more. One of my favourite features about it is there are many different race types in SP and MP. For example in MP there is capture the track where the person with the fastest time captures a section of the track.
3.5/5

GRAW
Ghost Recon Advanced War-fighter is a intense, visually stunning SP and MP team strategy/3rd person shooter. I have player MP and a little SP at the shop. I really enjoyed it particularly the MP as you could communicate with your partner what to do. The game also features random events, which is what AI on the PS2 was meant to be like, where different things would happen each time you reloaded the game, so a guard might choose a different patrol route (this would have been much appreciated in Splinter Cell 3). The graphics was more than impressive; although I don't think good graphics are vital for a good game; they have helped a lot in this game.
4/5

Moto GP
Moto GP is a motor bike racing game also for the Xbox 360. It is, as per, graphically perfect; but what about the game play. The game is very difficult and so I presume very realistic. The brake doesn't appear to work and, as there is no break light, it is unclear whether you are pressing the right button. As I have not had much time to play it my review is fairly limited.
2.5/5

Table Tennis
Table tennis, although created by Rockstar who made GTA, the game is not violent in any way. The game is very simple in both controls and everything. The graphics are un-belivable, even for the 360 but all you have to do is stand near the table and press (A). I think this would be a good game for Xbox Live Arcade unless it happens to have a in depth story line.
3/5

Wake me up when we're at E3

Check out this funny flash movie on newgrounds. It is a paradoy on the Greenday song: Wake me up when september ends . This is what the author says:

E3 (Electronics Entertainment Expo) is tomorrow! Woo!
Celebrate with this musical parody!

Two quick things: 1) I know I can't sing. You don't have to tell me. I am fully aware. My job is animation. =)
2) I appriciate reviews and try to respond to them. But I will be at E3 this year, so please don't be discouraged if it takes a few weeks for me to reply. Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!

Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent

Splinter Cell is a popular 3rd person stealth game that is published and created by ubi soft. It will feature a intense single player but with a twist. You are a double agent working for the bad guys. You have to choose how far you are prepared to go. If you don't go far enough they start to suspect you, however if you go to far... well I will leave that to your imagination. Furthermore the already stunning Multiplayer is going to be drastically improved. The game is expected to hit the store September 10th. Currently there have been 3 titles Splinter Cell, Splinter Cell Pandora Tommorow and Splinter Cell Choas Theory. However, I am not hear to tell you about the game I am here to discuss the games rating.

A un-offical source tipped me off that the game may be reciving a 18+ certificate. The previos 3 titles have recived 11+,12+ and 16+ respectivly. At Gamespot there has been no offical annoncement as to the games rating and the box image still says Rating Pending for both Xbox and Xbox 360 versions. However at Game, my local game shop, it claims to be 18+ on both consoles.

At ubisoft, it also says rating pending, and preumably this is the most reliable source. So in conclusion Double Agent may well be a 18+ but at current there is no reliable source certifing this. I will keep you posted.

Half Year Analysis

Summer is hear and like always gaming news dries up, Game news companies recycle old news putting a new spin on it and I review all those games that I never got round to. For example Civ4. But firstly let me analyze the 1st half of 2006, the next gen year.

The biggest thing as always is E3, with both Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft wheeling out big guns. Nintendo and Sony both talked about their upcoming consoles and Microsoft managed to trump them by showing a prerendered movie showing no cool fights, just a battered master chief, some epic sounding music and Halo 3. The world is in unfair. Microsoft only have to publish a picture of their office and some fanatic will say he can see a halo 3 picture and then everyone will make up some rubbish about how from that picture they can figure out that Halo 3 will feature a revolutionary Co-Op mode or something. Nintendo put up the best show, with a highly impressive demonstration of the Wii. Sony's conference was made up a lot of stats that made no sense, the graphics that the PS3 has, were poorly demonstrated on a pixelated screen.

In the hand held market, both Nintendo and Sony have re-released their handhelds, Nintendo's was the only one that changed more than its colour. Microsoft have also said they will be making a handheld console, speculations that it will be massive.

Console Update:
Xbox 360:
Not much news hear, Xbox Live Arcade is taking off, and looks set to continue with more subscribers Evey day.

PS3:
The controller has been reverted to the Dual Shock except with slight modifications, so the controller battle is left wide open. The major difference is that it detects movement but only tilting - this shall be interesting as will still lure in people for a standard game whilst adding interesting interactivity; however it could be considered as neither here nor there, we shall see. PS3 is still pushing ahead with the blu-ray. Their Real HD argument might come crashing down as it is rumored that they will be releasing one on a lower spec for less. This will be hypocritical as they criticized Microsoft for having two launch types.

Wii:
Expected to launch this November at around £130. Legend of Zelda, Mario and a cool tennis game confirmed for launch amongst others.

Game of the Half:
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Game to Watch:
Splinter Cell 4: Double Agent

MSN Extras...

...Drive me insane. There are two I am going to go in to detail today.

MSN Plus

Stay away from this software. Ok it has some quite cool feautures like being able to leave a message to someone while they are offline and creating your own states. However, when you appear offline, it changes you to online and so hundereds of people had a go at me for being online but not. Also, it would just not send half my messages so people thought I was ignoring them. Worst of all there is no quick uninstall button and you have to go to Control panel.

MSN online

I tried using MSN online so that I would be able to go on Civ 4 and talk on MSN at the same time on my dads laptop, first I decided I would check it on my computer to see if it worked, first I tried it in firefox, but it didn't work. At first, I thought it was Microsoft being is usual selfish self, but I tried it in IE and I had the same problem. Basically, I went to the website and there was a button to launch MSN online, I clicked on it, it asked me to log in. Fine I thought, clicked log in and it took me back the the first page. I looked at the top right and it said signed in, so I thought maybe it was just stupid a little and went through the process again. Same result.

So in conclusion, the only reason why I am sticking with MSN messenger is because my friends are on it not due to quality.

Forums

Forums, the modern day equivelent of forums in Roman times. Every website has them now. Even nationwide (a bank) has one. Well, nearly. Forums are a place where hundereds of people can come together and produce amazing stuff just for fun. Forums are a place where one can learn new talents. Forums can be a place to make the friends. Sadly, the operative word is can.

In forums there are many different types of people. There are so called N00bs and newbs. There is a major difference between a n00b and a newb.

n00b
A n00b is someone who uses excesive text speak and "l33t" speak. These tend to be idiots.

A newb, however, is someone who is new to the forum/game ect. These are perfectly decent people just haven't been at the forum long.

Also, there are people who think any one who is new to the forum is a complete idiot, and that ansering their questions is a waste of time. Between these people and the genuine n00bs, forums have become a place where huge amounts can be acheived, but, like everything else in the world, a few people spoil it. I posted on a forum that suffers badly from the n00b/anti-n00b take over. You can read it here.

Now, I have always wanted a forum for people who make constructive coments but I don't have the right sort of friends, so if there are any reader who know of a forum where this dream has been acomplished, but where there are still interesting people, or if there are enough, we could make our own.

DON'T SPOIL THE INTERNET

Blog Update & Quick Reviews

Now as all of my reader[0] are aware this blog appears to have run dry. Well it hasn't. I have found a time when I am just killing time and that is when I will post to my blog.It is monday so that is when you will find new posts. In the news recently. E3. Was going to do coverage of it, but got to hooked on the gamespot coverage and didn't have time. However, I am going to post what happened at the nintendo confrence, and a summary of sonys. Sorry Microsoft, but you get a whole post about Halo 3, which was all your confrence was about. Also, in the news, DS lite is out in England and looking good. With a selection of good games like Metroid Prime it looks to be a summer hit. Also, Sony have made a mistake with the PSP. They have launched a new one. The problem is the only change is it is white. Firstly, the black looked better, secondly, no one is going to trade in their old one and pay money to have it changed to white and finnally, they won't capture a new audience because the black one is cheaper. If it wasn't bad enough for Sony, their UMDs are being trashed by movie companys as it is too expensive for such a small market. Looks like the PSP will have to prove itself as a games console now, Sony should have planned for that one.

I went to France on an exchange[full post coming later] and bought Splinter Cell: Chaos theory for 9 euros. Bargain. I'll do a review of that after Civ 4. It is rumored that SC 4 will be an 18+ on the 360. This will irate me to no end if it is the same case on the Xbox, are they just doing away with stealth. Rome Total War has a free expansion pack as I belive I have mentioned earlier called Alexandria, I'll bring you the lowdown of that next week.

And finally, The World Cup. No blog has gone without mentioning it somewhere. Love it or hate it it is taking over the world. England are through to the quaters, Owen is injured, leaving us with lanky, walking wounded wayne and the kid who is bunking lessons to come along. We won't get past the quaters, so that is the end of that.

Quick Reviews
Black
Ok, it is a long time since I played this but I think this review should still be adequette. I played on the single player. The graphics are simply stunning, esspically considering it is a PS2. The physics, the AI everything. It has the feeling of a well polished game. It is a bit like GRAW. The problem with the game is sometimes it can get very frustrating, there is this one bit where there is an invisible sniper and you have to run past it. But in conclusion a solic SP game but lacked MP which was a shame.

Oblivion
A stunning RPG. My friend got this at the same time as I got Fable so it made Fable look small and pety. In fable, one of the missions you played you got to fight in a arena, in Oblivion you can go to the arena any time and even watch it and place bets on the result. In fable you could walk from one edge of the map to the other in an hour. In Oblivion it would take the best part of a day on a horse, riding at full speed and not being attacked by any bandits. Oblivion is so deep I can not really review it, I will try and get my friend to review it, I doubt I will succeed.

Thats all because I have forgotten what other games to do.

Da Vinci Code

"Hanks looks and performs like a lump of dough in a wig" and "THE WHOLE THING GOES ON FOR HOURS AND HOURS" are 2 of my favourtite quotes from the review on the BBC website for the Da Vinci Code. I have many posts upcoming but I will post this now. I am being the last person in the UK to read the book. As far as I can tell, it is a fictional book that weyone took litterally. Particually the Church. I have read 1 of his and found it good but stupid. I have enjoyed books by Isacc Asimov because there is a puzzle and then he solves it cleverly. The problem with Digital Fortress is that it is the same but not nearly clever enough.

Blog Update

Hello. Sorry about the lack of posts, I have been revising for SATS in the time where I would normally post to my blog. Anyway I am back, with loads of stuff to write about. As I have prior mentioned, I have got quick reviews for Oblivion, PGR3, Ghost Recon, Black and many others. Also, I WILL review Civ 4 as well as Fable Lost Chapters and bring you the low down of E3. Now does that make up for the lack of posts or what. Been playing on Delta Force 2 MP recently, particularly the team death match. This was partly inspired by playing Half Life at my friends. Hopefully, I may play MP red Alert 2 over there as well, t'would be awesome. Also, I will be, hopefully, be telling you about the expansion packs to both AoE 3 and Civ 4.

What I am playing on this month: Civ 4, Delta Force 2

Revlution Renamed - Wii

The new console from Nintendo has changed its name! At first I thouht it was a poorly shortend title for the news item and that it was an improvement to the wifi or something but no. I am still trying to work out their reasons behind it. They say it was the anser to the name revolution but I am not blown over by it. Although I have nothing against the name itself, I feel they have left it too late to change it as everyone knows it as the revolution. Apparently the 2 'i's are meant to represent their controller and playing together. Hopefully the name will grow on me.

Sorry for not writting recently, I have a lot on with SATS and everything, hopefully after next week I will get back to frequent writting, starting with quick reviews for : Black, Oblivion, PGR3, Gost Recon Advanced warfighter and others. Also, full length revies of Civ 4 and Fable the lost chapters.

AoE 3 Expansion

For all of you who bought Age of Empires 3 I have news. There is a new expansion coming along fairly soon after E3. It will include 3 playable native factions, new units/techs etc. for European civs, a new single player campaign and improved home cities.

The Native factions are designed to play differently to the European factions. They will not have the technology of the Europeans but each one will have a unique way to deal with them. Ensemble Studios did not make it clear if they would have a home city but I think they will have an equivalent. They will have an entirely new building/tech/unit charts as well.

As with every expansion pack there will be numerous new stuff. The new stuff will include a range of military units, mercenaries, new cards for your cities and some other stuff.

The new campaignis going to be based around history this time round. Apparently last time it was mostly fictional.

They did not say how the cities were going to be improved, merely said you will find out @ E3.

I will do a post like this for the Civ 4 Expansion when more information is available. Oh yeah, the expansion is called 'WarCheif" Which is one of the special units available to the natives.

Blog Update

There probably won't be many posts now until after May due to SATS. Having said this I still hope to review both Civ 4 and Fable: The Lost Chapters but I can make no promise.

I have decided to group all my gaming and technology internet items under one name:'Veteran Gamer'. You can view the website at homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.kiley/vg.swf. It will move and be placed in an HTML file soon. Because of this this blog will go over a re-design to feel much more contemporary. Firstly, I will just change the colour scheme, but when I get round to it it will be a full redesign so keep your eyes peeled.

To the joy of many, the relief of others and the disappointment of a few the new law prohibiting children under the age of 17 being able to M rated games has fallen through on the grounds that it goes against the US. Constitution of Free Speech. This will mean that it is unlikely that this law is going to have any side effects in the UK. Phew. You can read the full story here.

Also this month I might give a low down on the PS3 and Nintendo Revolution. It ain't looking good for Sony is all I can say.

My new Google group has launched so if you want to try and get in go to the webpage mentioned above a cycle round to Google group.

Blog Update

I was inspired this morning to write this post because someone I don't know has left a comment related to the blog. [Update: I then checked my other mail box and discovered I do know him :(] I was going to write it any way but I never got round to it.

His question was "I have heard that the PS3 is coming out next Christmas, is this true?"

Sony originally said that it was coming out around about now in Japan, despite EA saying "What, are you crazy, you haven't even given us development software yet" Sony stuck to their guns. Recently they have come out and said "yeah you were right" At the moment there is only one confirmed release date and that is November, but before you get your hopes up that is just in Japan. My theory is because Sony say it will be 10x more powerful that the X360 and still be cheap they won't have enough money to launch world wide simultaneously as they need to make some money from the games before they can make more. Because of this it is unlikely that, unless Sony sell millions of games and consoles very quickly it is unlikely it will hit America before March, even later for Europe. Having said this all news behind the PS3 is very liquid at the moment and so not even the confirmed dates are set in stone. We will have to wait and see. In conclusion, if you live in Japan you might get it next Christmas, if you don't it is almost impossible you will get it before Christmas

Also I have now been on a Xbox 360. It was awesome, I will interview him and the other person who I know to have one. The reason this is so late is because I have had my French Exchange student here. Although it was hard work having to constantly look after some one it was great fun. I am looking to going over to France where I will play tons of Xbox 36o with him as he has one.

Furthermore I got Fable Lost Chapter this weekend. It is an open ended RPG for the Xbox. I hope to review it after Civ 4. I will do quick reviews when I have been round to my friends’ house and played on black.

Finally, if you are in the Guildford area, go see The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe at the electric theatre.

Quick Reviews coming soon which will include Black

Windows Vista

Microsoft have announced their new OS to be released at the end of this year : Windows Vista. Apart from all the usual upgrades in security/performance ect. they are turning Windows style up side down. Windows are translucent, effects 3D and altogether has a very flash website feel to it. Other improvements include live search. ie, as you type a letter in it instantly comes back with the results. This was first used by Google with Ajax and is available at google suggest. If you have Fire Fox with Grease Monkey then you can get a script for it that will use it on the home page.

Another update to the searching it that you can apply 'meta tags' to the file. These are basically key words so you don't have to know what the file name is to find it.

In the gaming world one of the most exciting things about Vista is it will ship with DirectX 10. Microsoft claim it will offer 6-8x the graphical power of DirectX 9. The implication of this is if you are looking to get a graphics card, wait until the big companies release their DirectX 10 cards.

Another feature is the multiple browsers. For example you have a media browser which lets you view images, watch movie clips and listen to tracks, there is also a games browser which will allow you to sort by numerous things. I think they will both be a like iTunes/WMP in the sense that, as far as I am aware, get information of a server that says all the pieces of information.

Stay tuned for more Vista updates and don't buy a new computer unless you have to, hold off until Vista.

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker and Ico

My friends were arguing over some game graphics and as gaming is my one real hobby I thought I'd step in. The two games were Legend of Zelda Wind Waker and Ico. The argument wasn't between which one was better though. They were arguing about whether the above mentioned Zelda game had decent graphics. Ico was only drawn in as an example to show what 'decent' graphics are. Here is my verdict on both of them:

Before anyone goes "They are rubbish because they are cartoony/any other style" I would like to say graphic qualitly has nothing to do with style, it is to do with how smooth a circle is, how far things are drawn and how good the textures are.

Legend of Zelda Windwaker

It is fair to say these graphics are meant to be cartoony. This may put some people off and is certainly not the most widely used style for a reason. The curves are very good and non main features have been blurred to great a soft feel. Textures are possibly the downfall to this graphics. They use plain colors with few gradients and a lack of realistic repeating plans. Also, the water is not very good. The game was released in late March 2003.

Score: 3.5/10

Ico

This was used as the example of 'Good Graphics'. To say that at first sight these look amazing. Upon closer inspection how ever you discover that the textures are not repeated but just stretched to create pixelated texture. As with Zelda, water has been done fairly poorly. When some one gets in water it ripples, it is not a solid mirror. Also, they have completely missed out shadow and it does not handle distance at all well. On the other hand, the main characters are beautifully rendered and the textures at a distance look very nice. Because the game is fairly new I would also expect individual blades of grass not a stretched texture called grass.jpg It was released early December 2005.

Score : 4/5

Blog Update

Hello everyone
Hi Dr. thk123

I am truly addicted to playing Civ 4 and now I have played all forms of multi player have run out of excuses of why I have not reviewed it. I will try to review it this month but I have a lot on:

  • Playing Civ 4

  • Lion, Witch wardrobe rehearsals

  • Playing Civ 4

  • Paper Round

  • Playing Civ 4

  • Writing to my French Exchange student

  • Playing Civ 4

  • Having a social life (what ever)

  • Playing Civ 4

  • Doing HW

  • Playing Civ 4

I rest my case. Also, I hope to write some questions for people who own a X360 and so when I get the replies to them I will post them.

I went to the Surrey Skills Festival Yesterday. SSF is this thing for people in year 9 to help them make choices about later life. It was really fun as I got to be on the radio, TV, record stuff, video stuff and loads of other great stuff. (yes there was a competition to use 'stuff' the most times in one sentence.)

In other gaming news Creative Assembly, the genius's behind Total War, have said they are making 'Medieval 2: Total War.' Why not Rome Total War or Shogun Total War. I will get it at some point but as far as I can tell it is Rome Total War in Medieval Times.

Also, Splinter Cell 4 has now been named Splinter Cell : Double Agent. It is now slightly RPGish. I quote the advert "How far will you go to succeed". Basically you are an double agent and you will pretend to be on the badies team. I don't know if this will work. It will still be a good game is my reckoning thought because the original people are on the job and so far all of theirs have been AMAZING.

I would like to draw your attention to my new blog that will soon be changing its address. Currently it is at http://starwarsep7.blogspot.com/. Basically it is me and a group of my friends making a movie. It will probably collapse fairly soon but what the hey. Read it to find out more.

Xbox 360 Quantity Update

Now, as you all know, there is a massive shortage of Xbox 360s in England. Microsoft have claimed they sent more than 40 but but some how I doubt it. Unfortunatly this meant that there were alot of unhappy people. Up until now Game(shop.game.net) have been saying they will release theirs in early Febuary and are taking no bookings. HMV (www.hmv.co.uk) on the other hand are selling as they come in and are taking bookings. The problem is, in HMV it will be June before they catch up on the amount of preorders. And that is if know one else calls in. I saw this poster in Game which may show the turning of the tide.

If the picture appears garbled click on it for a clear picture)

This picture was taken on the 13/01/05 on Game on Guildford High Street. If I get any more info (I might phone Game and HMV and record the conversation providing it is legal) I will tell you.

Quick Reviews

Alot of the games I am reviewing are X360. I played them at my local game. The graphics really are as good as they claim to be and once you have got used to the controller it is wonderful. But what about the game play?

Kameo :Elements of Power - Xbox 360
Wonderful. I really enjoyed rolling about in a rock a jumping huge jumps and then digging under the enemy as a plant and smashing them away. It is very linear and not particularly revolutionary in game concepts but is fun none the less. What I particularly like is that you have to think how are you going to tackle particular enemies. Like there are these ones which roll around then hit you with a club. When you attack the normally they just roll up in to a ball for a bit a suffer no damage. What you have to do is to make them go in to a ball and then roll them into this pit of lava.

Call of Duty 2 - Xbox 360
Thankfully it does not have the ridiculous sub name 'Big Red One' like it's PC/PS2/Xbox versions do. The particle effects are so cool to watch, but if you do you will find your self dead. This game is so intense that you find your self shouting at your men and when a grenade explodes you almost dive away from the console. The game has 2 main weaknesses. One, it has already been done about a million times before and two you die about every 4 seconds. What sets this apart from all other FPSs is that you have to think everything through to stay alive. For instance, you might have to chuck a smoke grenade out in front of your truck. Swing your self over the side, stumble about blindly until you find something to hide behind. So in this scenario you have to work out where you are going. Plus, you have to asses you targets. A great game, I highly recommend it for your 360.

Peter Jacksons King Kong : The Official Game of the Movie - Xbox 360
This game is terrible for a number of reasons. For one the title is too long! For 2, unless there is lightning the graphics are mediocre for an Xbox. HELL THIS IS AN XBOX 360. It is unclear what you are meant to be doing and then you die. I like the idea of playing as the beast and the human. But the beast you just press RT and with the men you find your self laughing at the fact these people are yelling at you to do what they might have told you but probably while there was thunder. On the plus, the movie is good so all credit to Peter Jackson

My friend leant me a few Xbox games because he has sold his xbox so that he has enough money for a 360. He said I could have the games that won't work on the 360 and borrow the ones that will. I will review 2 this month and one next month.

Forza Motor Sport - Xbox
This racing game got a great deal of praise from Gamespot and will get a great deal from me. Although I prefer unrealistic racing games like PGR. I really enjoyed this one. It has many strengths. The most noted one is the fact you can customize every car to the extreme. From put a cool paint job on it to practically putting a Enzos engine in a Mini! My favorite strength is when you are racing at 200 MPH, the thrill is unbelievable. Spinning cars and watch them smash in to cars miliseconds behind, trying to get control of your car when you are spinning. I love it. It is because of the realism that this exists. What I need is a realistic racing game. PGR3!!!.

Secret Weapon over Normandy - Xbox
This is a 3rd person plain shooter with awesome plane explosions in single player. The game is great fun, puts you in a variety of different missions. From destroying speeding missiles or infiltrating a German bas to destroy its landing craft its there. The multi-player, although fun. Is not as fun as it could be. Yes it Versus and co-op. But versus becomes boring and there are no way enough missions. Plus, all planes blow up in same/similar ways.

King Kong and my Gaming Mood Board

You have to go see King Kong. I went to see it on Saturday and it is the kind of Movie where it won't be nearly as good at home unless you have a home cinema system. You won't get the branches cracking behind you as you are running through this forrest or the deafing roar echo all around you. Aside from the experince the film is AWESOME. When Kong grabs those planes. Just go see it. I recomend it.

Also, for my Textiles we had to make a mood board. I did it on gaming. So here you go. It is a supplment of CONSOLE WARS.

Blog Update

Happy New Year everyone.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas and got what they wanted. I GOT CIV 4. And after many days spent trying to get it working I am now officially addicted. A full review this month. Here is a taster of the review.

"Many people have described this game as addictive, smoking is addictive and people quit smoking."

Also, my friend who was going to get an Xbox 360 has the money now just needs a place to buy it that is around the RRP rather than £600! so we will just have to wait until February.

This month also:

  • Quick Reviews - Featuring 3 Xbox 360 games

  • Current Generation Wars - Console wars supplement examining the Xbox, PS2 and NGC.

  • If your lucky Alpha Centurai Review

Thought of the Month :"Is the total amount of Xbox 360s in England more than 5 or not?

"All your base are belong to us"
